Message from SGI-UK General Director Robert Harrap for November 18th

Dear Friends, Friday 18th November is the anniversary of the founding of the Soka Gakkai in 1930, as well as the anniversary of first President Makiguchi passing away in 1944. Attached is SGI President Ikeda???s message to the 21st HQ meeting in Tokyo which served as the start of the celebrations for this anniversary. I always think of this date as an opportunity to express my gratitude for all the contributions of our pioneers who have enabled the kosen-rufu movement to develop to what it is today. There are many ways we can express gratitude, in the same way that there are many ways to contribute. Many people take this opportunity to make a financial contribution for the development of the kosen-rufu movement, and I would like to use this short message to express my gratitude for that support. Nichiren Daishonin reminds us ???you may think you offered gifts to the treasure tower of the Thus Come One Many Treasures, but that is not so. You offered them to yourself. You, yourself, are a Thus Come One who is originally enlightened and endowed with the three bodies. You should chant Nam-myoho-renge-kyo with this conviction. (WND-1, p299-300). Thank you very much for all your hard work for kosen-rufu in the United Kingdom. Please share this message with the members in your area. Very best wishes, Robert Harrap

SGI President Ikeda’s Message for May 3, 2016

My dear friends of SGI-UK, I wish you a brilliant Soka Gakkai Day and a happy Soka Gakkai Mothers Day!

I am delighted and proud to be able to celebrate May 3 in great victory, together with fellow members in 192 countries and territories. The success of our movement owes everything to your tireless, dedicated efforts and solid unity. I thank you all from the bottom of my heart.

Nothing gives me greater joy than the many reports I receive each day of the wonderful development of our SGI organizations around the world and the contributions they are making to their local communities and countries. And I am especially overjoyed to hear about the inspiring growth of our youthful successors and their efforts to expand our movement.

We have entered an age when Nichiren Daishonin’s Buddhism of the sun is beginning to shine ever more brightly as a world religion, illuminating all humankind. As proof of this, the SGI—a gathering of Bodhisattvas of the Earth—is becoming an increasingly radiant presence across the globe.

The Daishonin would surely shower us with his highest praises, and the Soka Gakkai’s first and second presidents, Tsunesaburo Makiguchi and Josei Toda, would certainly rejoice immensely.

Please be absolutely confident that not only you, but all your family members and loved ones, will eternally share in the benefit and good fortune arising from your efforts to promote this magnificent movement of worldwide kosen-rufu.

The Lotus Sutra states: “If one [is able to] expound the Lotus Sutra to one person, even one phrase of it, then you should know that he or she is the envoy of the Thus Come One. He has been dispatched by the Thus Come One and carries out the Thus Come One’s work.”1

Reaching out to a friend, listening to their problems, telling them about the Mystic Law, chanting together, helping them win over their challenges, rejoicing together—such seemingly ordinary and modest efforts are actually the supremely noble work of the Buddha and, as such, the best and surest things we can do for people’s happiness.

As SGI members, we engage in such efforts “day by day and month after month, never slackening in our resolve,”2 based on the spirit of valuing and respecting each person, which is the epitome of Buddhist humanism. That is why the Buddha’s wisdom, compassion, and power pulse vibrantly in our lives.

The Daishonin writes: “In judging the relative merit of Buddhist doctrines, I, Nichiren, believe that the best standards are those of reason and documentary proof. And even more valuable than reason and documentary proof is the proof of actual fact.”3

Our Buddhist practice is backed up by a clear and profound philosophy of life, reasonable and universal principles that all can accept as valid and true. Therefore, let us continue exerting ourselves in faith, practice, and study, and proudly show even greater actual proof—actual proof of gaining benefit by putting faith into practice in our daily lives and achieving victory by applying the teachings of Buddhism in society. The human revolution of each one of us attests to the brilliance of Nichiren Buddhism as a world religion for the 21st century.

Mr. Toda declared: “It is the Soka Gakkai’s mission to repay the debt of gratitude to Nichiren Daishonin and to pave the way for the lasting happiness of humanity by drawing up a grand 100-year plan—no, a grand plan for peace encompassing several millennia.”

May 3 is a day of fresh departure, when we renew our vow as Bodhisattvas of the Earth. I call on you to join me and fellow SGI members around the globe in moving forward anew in our grand march for kosen-rufu, brimming with hope and courage, and aiming for the happiness of humanity and world peace.

Our lives are connected by the Mystic Law. My wife, Kaneko, and I are continually chanting for all of you, our most dear and precious fellow members. We are praying with all our hearts for the vibrant health and long life; the safety and security; and the happiness and victory of you, your families, and loved ones, as well as all those in your communities. Please advance cheerfully, in a spirit of harmony and friendship!

President Ikeda's Message for Kosen Rufu Day March 16th

In this Year of Expansion in the New Era of Worldwide Kosen-rufu, many congratulations on holding this meeting in SGI-UK, giving fresh meaning to 16 March Kosen-rufu Day. In this March, my capable successors in your country as well as in 192 countries and territories across the globe are gathering in high spirits and making a momentous departure for the expansion of solidarity for peace based on our Buddhist beliefs in the dignity of life. This very fact is the proof that the bright future of kosen-rufu will continue to expand limitlessly. There is nothing more wonderful and reassuring than this.

On 16 March 1958, my mentor second Soka Gakkai president Josei Toda mounted a dress rehearsal for kosen-rufu as the last battle in his life. My mentor, who achieved the propagation of 750,000 households with a view to eliminate people’s misery and suffering, passed everything on to us for the future of kosen-rufu. My mentor declared that as king of the philosophical and spiritual world, the Soka Gakkai will advance eternally and fearlessly towards the security and prosperity of society and the peace and happiness of humanity.

When it arrives each year, 16 March is the solemn day for all successors to stand up together and make a vow to grasp the spiritual baton. This day is the prime point for the indestructible spirit of oneness of mentor-and-disciple. It is the day for us to make a fresh departure towards kosen-rufu and victory in our lives.

In ‘The True Aspect of All Phenomena’, the Daishonin states “There should be no discrimination among those who propagate the five characters of Myoho-renge-kyo in the Latter Day of the Law, be they men or women. Were they not Bodhisattvas of the Earth, they could not chant the daimoku. At first only Nichiren chanted Nam-myoho-renge-kyo, but then two, three, and a hundred followed, chanting and teaching others. Propagation will unfold this way in the future as well. Does this not signify ‘emerging from the earth’?” (WND-1, 385)

Whether someone sees your efforts or not, please recognise your profound and noble mission as a Bodhisattva of the Earth and proudly and courageously advance in your life based on the vow you have made.

Because you have a great mission, you may face great hardships. However, my mentor used to say, “The Daishonin’s Buddhism is a teaching that enables people struggling amid adversity to become happy. The more miserable and unhappy a person is, the more amazing the power and potential they can bring forth when they overcome their misfortune. Such people are able to truly encourage and be there for others who are suffering.” (SGI Newsletter, No. 7636)

The hardships that you are going through now will be the source of your strength to stand by and encourage people who are facing difficulties in the future. And eventually the human revolution of each individual who upholds the Mystic Law will significantly transform the karma of the land.

There is no need to rush. Worldwide kosen-rufu does not happen somewhere far away, but starts from our local community. As you steadily show the actual proof of “faith equals daily life” and “Buddhism equals society”, you are certainly creating the waves that “kosen-rufu equals world peace” as you vibrantly play an active part in society as a good citizen of your town, city, country and the world, and continue to expand solidarity for happiness and victory through dialogues of hope and encouragement with “two, three, and a hundred” people.

A passage from ‘On Repaying Debts of Gratitude’ reads “Nam-myoho-renge-kyo will spread for ten thousand years and more, for all eternity.” (WND-1, 736) The golden era of the kosen-rufu movement has just begun. The great light of hope radiating from this Buddhism of the people as a world religion will continue to illuminate our entire planet.

My wish is that all of you, my dear comrades in faith, will respect, protect and encourage one another and achieve the unity of “many in body one in mind” just as the Daishonin states, “transcending all differences among themselves to become as inseparable as fish and the water in which they swim.” (WND-1, 217) I would like each one of you to win and advance cheerfully through the expansion of your prayer, the expansion of your state of life and the expansion of your courage. Together, let’s open wide the door of a glorious new history in the new era of worldwide kosen-rufu.

Together with my wife, I am always praying that the sun of hope, good fortune and victory will shine brightly on throughout your lives.

Please give my warmest wishes to your family and to all your fellow members.

Please stay well!
